Cypress Knees and Fireflies

I was invited to go to an event featuring synchronous fireflies, fireflies that coordinate their flashing, at Congaree National Park in South Carolina. My supervisor at Tumacacori National Historical Park (where I volunteer as a gardener), entomologist Tony Palmer, thought I might be interested – I was.

The park is basically a swamp, with lush foliage and cypress trees. The Cypress roots, “knees”, stick up from the water and take various interesting forms: they fascinated me! I took many photos of the knees, intending to do something with their sculptural forms. In the dark of evening, the fireflies appeared, and their coordinated twinkling was magical. We saw another of the three species of synchronous fireflies (minus the swamp) at Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee, again magical!

I considered the forms of the knees that had intrigued me at Congaree and my mind envisioned them with colorful stripes, rather that the dull gray-brown they were. They seemed more playful with the addition of color and became the sculptures in this exhibit.

“Trees and Knees” is the true color of the swamp, rather dark and mysterious. The charcoal drawings deal with the sculptural forms and the aluminum paint drawings speak to the dark mystery of the swamp and the twinkling of the fireflies.

Ancient Ireland

This work was done September 2024 at a 6-day workshop -

Bold Territory: Experimental Drawing with Jeffery Hirst at the Ballinglen Arts Foundation, Ballycastle, County Mayo, Ireland. These drawings were a complete breakthrough for me asI used unusual materials, spackle, gesso carborundum, charcoal and India ink. Working in black and white brought me back to my days as an undergraduate working in intaglio and later in b&w photography. `

This was my 9th trip to Ireland. My first trip to Ireland was when I was 18. I don’t know if it was drinking mead or kissing the Blarney Stone but I realized that I had found home. These drawings are influenced by the various sacred sites I have visited throughout the years in Ireland from the neolithic monuments and engraved kerbstones of the Bru na Boine Valley dating back 5, 000 years ago to the goddess Brigid’s holy wells.

They also include the iconic images of boats from the golden boat found from the 1st century to current day currach fishing boats. In 1995, I lived in the West Coast of Ireland for 5 months when my son was 10 years old. My friend and roommate Aine introduced me to Irish mythology including the stories of the Tuatha Dé Danaan and Tír na nÓg, the land of the forever young in the otherworld.

Please enjoy the show and this blessing from John O Donohue
